This unique upper Mississippi River valley region, unscathed by ancient glaciers, due to the karst geology of the region which limited the flow of glacier ice is known as The Driftless Area.  The Driftless area's beauty is characterized by steep valleys running along the base of limestone bluffs with streams or coulees running through wooded valleys.  The region is known for fly fishing - brook, brown, and rainbow trout.
